With eldest siblings Marcia and Greg quickly approaching their respective heights of groovyness, ignoring the younger and less popular Brady’s would have been too easy for the scripting department at this point in the ‘Brady Bunch’ series.

Instead many episodes in this 23-episode 1971-1972 season pointedly explore Cindy and Bobby’s quest to fit in with their other family members. Both are encouraged to like themselves for being who they are instead of trying to become somebody else. You cannot have other people like you unless you do not first like yourself.

In the 3-part Grand Canyon adventure opening this season, Bobby and Cindy become lost from their family on a camping trip. They meet up with Jimmy, a young Indian (Michael Campo). Jimmy is also running away from his family because he feels isolated by his grandfather’s expectations. In return for helping them get safely back to Camp Brady, Jimmy receives food from Bobby and Cindy. All of these kids panic when they are discovered, but all ends well for everybody.

“In Big Little Man” Bobby embarks on a quest to become physically bigger. When this does not work with the speed which he had originally preferred, Bobby sets out to become a mental giant instead. “Mr. Brady” himself—Robert Reed—directs this episode.

Finally “Cindy Brady, Lady” shows Bobby having a friend of his play `secret admirer’ to his forlorn sister. Cindy is upset at having to be the youngest sibling in the family. Bobby’s action is really sweet specifically because I don’t know of many brothers (including my own) who actually would think of doing this. Then again, it could be Bobby’s empathy from his own age issues.

We also continue dealing with Jan’s ongoing psychological issues mentioned during the previous seasons.

Jan is trying out for pom pom girl (”Her Sisters Shadow”) so that her teachers will stop comparing her to `Marcia..Marcia..Marcia’. Even though Jan fails to be picked, it shows her determination to exercise an `independent streak’ when being a copy-cat of Marcia would have been so much easier. Anybody can relate to always being compared to somebody whom you are not.

Jan then learns that real beauty is inside a person when she meets her Aunt Jenny (Imogene Coco) in “Jan’s Aunt Jenny”. Because they had looked a lot alike in her childhood photographs, Jan is worried that she will look just like Aunt Jenny now does when she is older. Yet talking with Aunt Jenny subsequently gives Jan a new perspective—somebody else knows about the issues she is now going through. Coco was a really big star so Paramount’s ability to snag her for a guest appearance demonstrates the clout which this series had gained.

The Brady Bunch again proves why it sticks in the American psyche with this season. Many episodes delivered memorable social statements on tolerance, individuality, and identity without nagging to their audience.

This is a clever horror flick and, for me, is much better than “The Faculty,” which it is being compared to here in the other posts. I saw this at a film festival in its original language with subtitles and loved it. Reading the complaints here about the English dubbing reinforces that to truly enjoy this film, watch it in Danish with the subs on.

Part of the Ghost House Underground series of horror movies, THE SUBSTITUTE isn’t a horror movie at all. Instead it’s a suspense-filled comedy filmed in Denmark. The movie revolves around a 6th grade boy named Carl (Jonas Wandschneider). Carl was recently involved in a car accident in which he was injured and his mother was killed. Carl and his father, Jesper (Ulrich Thomsen) seem to be getting by, but inside each struggles with the death of their matriarch. At school, Carl’s teacher takes a suspended leave of absence and the class is presented with their substitute teacher for the rest of the term, Ms. Ulla (Paprika Steen). Ms. Ulla is a strict disciplinarian who knows which buttons to push to keep students quite and get them upset. She seems capable of reading the students’ minds and after a series of bizarre events, Carl and his classmates suspect Ulla isn’t who she claims to be and soon discover that she’s really an alien bent on world domination. Ulla wants to take the students on a field trip to Paris for what she claims is an opportunity to compete in a prestigious academic competition. The students know otherwise and attempt to convince the adults of what they already know before they leave for the trip and Ulla’s plan is set in motion.

THE SUBSTITUTE was directed and co-written by the Ole Bornedal, director of the amazing Russian vampire movie, NIGHTWATCH. Bornedal has a unique talent of making surreal films that aren’t just entertaining, but are based in reality, have a moral foundation, and deliver social commentary. NIGHTWATCH is an excellent example of this and, though not as strong a movie, THE SUBSTITUTE is as well. THE SUBSTITUE captivated my attention from the opening scene when a vortex through space opens and a silver sphere crashes to Earth, smashing into a chicken. That scene is hilarious and that dark humor is used throughout the movie. There isn’t anything really horrific about the film and the overall mood of the film feels like a teenage mystery story.

My only complaint about the DVD is that the copy I had the film was only available in dubbed English. About 3/4th of the movie the dubbing was okay, not great, but good enough to get by. However, there are moments in the film where the dubbing is atrocious. For instance, I think Carl’s sister and the smart girl in his class were dubbed by the same annoying female voice. If you can find a copy of the movie with the original Danish being spoken with subtitles in English, that’s the way to watch it.

Overall, THE SUBSTITUE is an enjoyable suspense-comedy with some great visuals (especially considering the low budget of the movie).

Where’s Cuba? Fernando Perez’s colorful tapestry of fantasy and street realism is a troubled love letter to Cuba. Fisherman and musician Luis Alberto Garcia is an abandoned child searching for his mother (aptly named Cuba) in an allegorical journey. He’s just one of Perez’s orphans, along with a social worker who faints every time she hears the word “sex” and a passionate ballet dancer who promises God her celibacy if she can get the role of Giselle and then falls for her new partner. The metaphorical tales have a tendency to become so abstract they almost dissolve, but the heady sex and throbbing music power it through to the imaginative and sweet climax with magic and color and earthy eroticism. If he never gets an answer to his qustion, his lush portrait at least sketches his mother country’s identity crisis. –Sean Axmaker
